Measuring Tips

  • Always measure with a 1" wide metal tape measure. ( I recommend a contractors grade Stanley brand measuring tape.)
  • On larger windows always use a helper for accurate measurements.
  • The picture above shows the increments of a tape measure. ( You only need to concern yourself with 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" 3/4", 7/8", and 1" full inch increments. ) Custom window treatments are manufactured to the nearest 1/8"
  • When measuring never round up to the next 1/8" always round down. ( Example: 31 7/16" needs to be read as 31 3/8")

Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount

Inside Mount Measuring Tips To mount blinds inside your window frame for a recessed fit, your soffit should be at least 1" deep. Inside mounted blinds cover only window glass-not the frame.
  1. Mark your order Inside Mount.
  2. Measure the opening width in three places: Top, Middle, and Bottom. Record the narrowest of these dimensions. When measuring arched windows pay close attention to the place where the window stops and the arch begins. In most cases that will be the narrowest dimension.
  3. Measure the opening length from the soffit to the sill in two or three places depending on the width. ( Rule of thumb when measuring for the length of a window. 48" or less measure length twice, Over 48" measure length three times. very large windows might need a fourth or fifth measurement ) Record this measurement.
  4. Record exact measurements to the nearest 1/8". The factory will make allowances to ensure proper fit. Refer to the above measuring instructions.
Outside Mount Measuring Tips Outside mounted blinds cover the total window area including frame from side to side and top to bottom.
  1. Mark your order Outside Mount.
  2. Measure the exact width to be covered. Be sure the measurement overlaps the window opening (inside mount width) by at least 1½" on each side. Record this measurement. On window treatments that have to clear window sills such as vertical blinds. The overlaps should be equal to the distance between the wall and the back of the window treatment.
  3. Measure the exact length from at least 1½" above the soffit to sill. For windows without a bottom sill, add 1½" more. Record this measurement. For window treatments that have to clear window sills such as vertical blinds. The over laps should be equal to the distance between the wall and the back of the window treatment. This rule provides for better privacy.
  4. Record exact measurements to the nearest 1/8". The factory will make allowances to ensure proper fit. Refer to the above measuring instructions.
NOTE: If your window frame projects out from the wall, you may need to specify extension brackets so that the blinds will clear the frame. Control Locations Standard control locations are wand tilter on left and lift cord on right. Unless otherwise indicated, standard control locations will be provided.
